It was announced that Perth’s Ravenswood International Raceway would be relocated within the following two years.
On September 22, 1998 the WA State Government announced that the new facility, incorporating an international class drag strip, state of the art driver training areas and a new speedway, would be located on Rockingham Road, near Kwinana in Perth’s southern suburbs.
The new track would be designed to minimise noise emissions using sound walls and bunding, ensuring the new complex would give great benefits to the local community while being an environmentally responsible neighbour.
Ravenswood managing director Gary Miocevich said: “The new ‘Motorplex’ will give a huge boost to the many businesses related to drag racing and speedway, including race car construction and servicing, food, merchandise, advertising, hire, tourism and so on. We expect the facility will attract 15,000 (people) to its major events.”
ANDRA CEO Tony Thornton said: “The enthusiasm of the Western Australian Government in supporting the new facility is a strong endorsement for the benefits, financial and otherwise, that ANDRA Championship Drag Racing provides to local and state economies. Gary Miocevich and his team have done an outstanding with this project.”
